When you’re driving in Florida, you might be tempted to try to do some of the same activities that you normally do in your home. However, these are often distractions that could result in an accident and that should be avoided if at all possible.
Technology
Keeping a phone or another device in your hand might be common when you’re at home or even when you’re a passenger in a vehicle, but this can be one of the causes of motor vehicle accidents. Any text or phone call can wait until you’re able to come to a stop or you’re able to pull over to a parking lot to check your device.
Drowsy driving
Another way to avoid distractions that could result in a car crash is not driving if you’re sleepy. This can result in reaction times that are similar to driving while impaired. If you feel sleepy, then consider stopping at a rest area or having another licensed driver take over so that you can rest in the passenger seat.
Multitasking
When you’re behind the wheel of your vehicle, it’s not a time to try to eat, put on your makeup, brush your hair, or perform other activities that you would do in other locations. These activities can take away from the full attention that you need to pay to the road in front of you. Taking both hands off the wheel to perform these activities could result in running off the road or hitting another vehicle.
When you get in your vehicle, your focus should be on driving and paying attention to others who share the road. Distractions that are commonplace can wait until you’re at home or until you’ve reached your destination.
